More bean spillage from our industry insider

It looks like next week could be a busy time for 360 fans, with an industry insider claiming that Microsoft is due to make several announcements next week.

On Monday, a well place industry source informed us that Microsoft is planning to hold an event here in Europe next week, where – among other things – it was expected to announce a 360 price cut for Europe and new titles from Bungie and Rare.

Following yesterday’s price cut announcement and denials from Microsoft that it’s planning to hold an event at all, we checked with our source again to see what’s what, with interesting results.

Our source assured us that despite the price cut announcement yesterday, the event is definitely due to go ahead next week, and that Microsoft will make lots of announcements.

Sadly, our source was unable to reveal what these announcements will be, but did throw a little light on when the event may take place.

With longstanding rumours suggesting that a Bungie related announcement could be coming on 25 September, we asked our source whether this was the date when the mysterious event will take place.

Our source said that this was a date they had heard of in relation to the event, but wasn’t in a position to confirm it.

At this point, we’d like to remind everyone that this is all still rumours. Nevertheless, our source is well placed, so it should be interesting to see what happens next week.

Bungie is to announce its much talked about new game next week, an industry insider has revealed.

Speaking to GAMER.tm, an industry insider has confirmed that Microsoft is due to hold an event in Europe next week, where Bungie is due to take the wraps off its next game – the first title the studio has developed since splitting from Microsoft.

Unfortunately, our source – who obtained this information directly from Microsoft – was unable to confirm what that game will be. As such, it’s unknown whether the new title will be Halo 4, or indeed whether it will be related to the Halo universe in any way, shape or form.

Our source also revealed that Rare may be set to announce a new game as well.

With Viva Pinata: TIP having just been released and Banjo Nuts ‘n’ Bolts shaping up very nicely, the British studio seems to be rediscovering some of the amazing form it showed on the SNES and N64. So its next project should be highly anticipated.

Unfortunately, our source wasn’t able to shed any light on what this project will be, but we should find out next week.

According to our source, a few other announcements are due to be made at this mysterious event, so expect plenty of fireworks when things kick off.

Publishers rule videogame universe

Developer Bungie's power play signals change

By BEN FRITZ

The biggest news at this year's E3 show wasn't a new videogame but the fight between Bungie and its publisher -- and former owner -- Microsoft over when to announce the "Halo" developer's new project.

Microsoft ultimately won the dispute, and Bungie was forced to shelve its planned announcement. But the fact that one of the industry's most prominent development studios came into E3 with its own strategy signals a change in the videogame biz.

Film and TV have competing centers of power. Studios, networks, producers, stars and agencies all have significant leverage, which only gets bigger as they grow more prominent. But in videogames, there is traditionally only one endgame for successful developers: getting acquired by a big publisher.

"Publishers have done a very good job of maintaining a one-sided financial model throughout the industry, and the real reason comes down to their desire to own the intellectual property," says Steven Smith, an attorney focusing on the videogame biz at Greenberg Glusker.

The result is that the creators of videogames are lacking in power, recognition and, compared with their counterparts in other media, the financial rewards that usually come with success.

Bungie's groundbreaking declaration of independence from Microsoft last year is one of a few recent signs that the situation may be changing. The past year also has seen a group of well-respected Japanese developers form their own company, Platinum Studios, and land a multigame deal with Sega. Ken Levine, head of the Take-Two-owned studio that made last year's smash "BioShock," is renegotiating what could be a lucrative contract with the help of reps at CAA.

But such moves are still quite rare.
